 Build your legs?

I’m sure you’ve heard it before if you want to lose belly fat, you need to build your legs. Let’s see the logic behind that.

As we established in the previous article “Why we need to build muscles to lose fat,” you can click here if you’d like to look at it. Fat cells are simply storage, where our body accumulates unused energy. If we eat (and food is energy) more than we use (burn it while doing any physical activity), we are in surplus. Our body is very economical; it doesn’t like to waste anything and store it for later. We also said that muscles are the functional tissue that needs nutrients for maintenance and energy for work. That means the more muscles we have, the more nutrients we use, and the less fat we store.

Muscles in the abdominal area

I don’t want to disappoint you, but there isn’t a target fat loss. It simply doesn’t exist. Your fat builds and comes off according to your genetic predisposition. Doing crunches will never give you a six-pack, but eating healthy food, building muscles, and creating a calorie deficit will. That’s why there is a saying, “abs are built in the kitchen.” I would also add the gym. Technically, we all have a six-pack because abdominal and oblique muscles naturally have e square shape, but most of us find it hard to see because they are covered with a layer of fat. Very skinny people with very low body fat have a six-pack naturally.

Large muscle groups in the legs

So why legs? The answer is straightforward; legs have larger muscles than any other part of our body (and in our body, the larger the muscle, the stronger it is). Therefore it makes more sense to invest your time in building bigger muscles to get better and faster results. Also, the legs and core play the same role in our body as the base for the house. You can’t build a house if its foundation is weak.

Subcutaneous vs Visceral fat in the abdominal area

Another thing I would like to remind you, even if you have a flat belly (no fat underneath your skin), you still might have visceral fat, the one that wraps around your inner organs that might cause severe health issues such as heart diseases and diabetes. It is the most dangerous fat in our bodies.

I hope this article explained “why” and inspired you never to skip a leg day again; from now

on, you will enjoy your squats and lunges!
